The Red German Shepherd is a striking variation of the traditional German Shepherd breed. It has a deep reddish brown or mahogany colored coat. While German Shepherds are seen in black and tan, sable, or all black colors.
But this red variation stands out due to its rich, vibrant coloring. Their red coat color comes from a specific genetic combination of recessive red (E locus) and sable genes. Such as the expression of the pheomelanin pigment which is controlled by certain alleles.
Red German Shepherds can have solid red coats or a red base with black saddle markings. And they are not very rare.
History
The red coat color in German Shepherds originates from the breed’s early genetic foundation in the 19th century. And it is not considered a fault in the breed standard. Red German Shepherds have two main variations based on the distribution of black and red pigments.
One is red sable in which the base color is red or mahogany with black tipped hairs, which creates a shaded effect. And the sable pattern gets darken with age as more black pigment develops.
Second is solid red in which the coat is red or mahogany without prominent black markings. And solid red German Shepherds are rarer than red sables.
Physical Characteristics
Red german shepherds have a strong straight back that slopes gently from shoulders to hips. And deep chest with muscles for stamina and power. Also erect ears and a long bushy tail.
They can have three types of coats short, medium and long. And most red German Shepherds have dark brown eyes. Can also have lighter shades of amber or hazel but less common. And their nose is black.

1. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia
This is a genetic condition in which the hip and elbow joint develops abnormally. And symptoms can be difficulty in standing and reluctance to exercise. So if this happens you should maintain their weight healthily, provide joint supplements and avoid excessive jumping.
2. Degenerative Myelopathy
Degenerative Myelopathy is a spinal cord disease that affects their movement and is similar to ALS in humans. Symptoms for this can be weakness in the hind legs, difficulty walking and eventual paralysis. And there is no cure for this, only physical therapy can slow progression.
3. Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus)
It is a life threatening condition where the stomach twists and traps gas and blood flow cuts off. Symptoms for this are swollen abdomen, restlessness and unsuccessful vomiting. So try to give them smaller meals and avoid vigorous exercise after eating.
4. Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI)
It is a condition where the pancreas doesn’t produce enough digestive enzymes. And symptoms for this are weight loss, diarrhea and poor coat condition. To treat this, give them enzyme supplements.
5. Allergies
Red German Shepherds can have Itchy skin, ear infections and digestive issues. So use hypoallergenic food and shampoos.
Lifespan Of Red German Shepherd
Their lifespan is 9 to 13 years. It can be extended with a balanced diet, regular exercise and preventive care.
Exercise
Red German Shepherds are high energy dogs that need regular exercise. Up to 90 to 120 minutes to stay healthy and balanced. But split into two or three sessions (morning and evening).
There are many exercises for them like walking, jogging, fetch and hiking. And for their mental health give them puzzle toys and tug of war. Or you can hide objects with a strong scent and have them locate.
Diet And Nutrition Of Red German Shepherd
Red German Shepherds are muscular dogs that require a high protein, nutrient rich diet to maintain their energy levels and muscle health. So you can give them 22 to 24% protein for adults and 24 to 28% for puppies.

Red German Shepherds have a double coat that requires brushing 2 to 3 times per week. And bathing once in 6 weeks to keep their fur healthy and reduce shedding.
Also trim their nails with a nail clipper after every 3 weeks. And clean their ears with a vet approved ear cleaner after one week. And don’t insert it deep into the ear canal.
Dental care is also important so brush their teeth 2 to 3 times per week with a dog specific toothbrush and toothpaste.
