Yes, Great Danes do shed more than people expect. Great Danes have a single layer coat but still their short hairs stick to clothes, furniture and carpets. Great Dane is such a large dog their moderate shedding can feel like a lot simply due to the surface area of their body.

How Much Do Great Danes Shed?

Most owners notice an increase in shedding during spring and fall. Because these are the periods when dogs naturally adjust their coat density to prepare for warmer and cooler weather.

How Much Do Great Danes Shed

Great Danes also shed daily in which old, damaged and dead hairs fall out and are replaced with new ones. And if your great dane is a senior dog, it can shed more due to slower cell regeneration and drier skin.

Causes Of Excessive Shedding In Great Danes

1. Nutritional Deficiencies

Diet plays a direct role in their skin and coat health. Great danes which are fed low quality kibble or diets lacking in essential nutrients suffer from dry hair that sheds more easily.

So to avoid their dry hair and excessive shredding you have to give them vitamins A, E and B-complex with adequate protein and zinc. And one of the most important nutrients for coat health is omega 3 fatty acids and biotin.

2. Allergies

Great Danes are prone to allergies which can lead to inflamed skin and also excessive shedding. These allergies may be:

  • Environmental: Dust, pollen, mold and grass.
  • Food related: Grains, chicken, beef or additives in commercial kibble.
  • Contact based: Reactions to certain shampoos, detergents and fabrics.

3. Stress, Hormonal Imbalance, Medical Conditions

Dogs shed more when they feel stressed like people lose more hair when anxious. Stressors in a Great Dane’s life might include:

  • Changes in the household (new pet, baby, moving)
  • Loud noises (fireworks, thunderstorms)
  • Boredom or separation anxiety

4. Parasites: Fleas, Ticks And Mites

External parasites are also a major cause of fur loss in dogs. If your Great Dane is constantly scratching, chewing or has irritated skin. You should check for:

  • Fleas: Tiny fast moving insects that can cause flea allergy dermatitis (FAD).
  • Ticks: Can lead to hair loss and infections.
  • Mites (mange): Can cause severe hair loss, redness and scabbing.

How To Reduce Shedding In Great Danes

1. Proper Grooming Schedule

You should brush your great danes coat 2 to 3 times per week with a bristle brush. And bathe your Great Dane with a moisture rich shampoo once a month.

2. Best Brushes For Great Dane Coat Type

The best brushes are those that clean and massage without irritating great danes sensitive skin. Such as:

Dealing With Shedding In Your Home

To keep your home fur free, you should use a high suction vacuum for trapping hair and allergens. Place air purifiers with HEPA filters in rooms where your dog spends the most time such as the living room or bedroom. Also wash your pet bedding weekly. Models designed for pet owners:

  • Dyson Ball Animal 2
  • Shark Navigator Lift Away

The post Best Brush For Siberian Husky : Tools And Tips appeared first on United States Dog.

]]>
Siberian Huskies are beautiful, attractive, and playful dogs that captivate people with their wolf-like appearance. They have a double coat, which requires regular care to keep it healthy and to look fresh. Regular grooming not only enhances their natural beauty but also provides support to skin health and helps reduce shedding.

Why Brushing Is Crucial For Huskies?

Siberian Huskies have a double, dense coat consisting of two layers: a soft undercoat and a protective topcoat. The Topcoat is thick and helps protect them from both hot and cold weather, while the Undercoat is soft and murky, providing insulation against cold temperatures.

Brushing is crucial for their skin and coat because it prevents matting, manages shedding, helps regulate temperature, increases the life of the coat, and makes it easier to spot any skin issues or marks.

Should You Brush A Husky Wet Or Dry?

We recommend you to brush your Husky when the coat is dry, because brushing a wet coat can create tangles and mats. After giving your Husky a bath, use a towel to dry their hair, and once the coat is completely dry, start brushing on it.

After applying a brush on dry coat will prevent matting, natural oils will be distributed, and make the coat more shiny, after this your Husky will look even more beautiful.

wet vs dry siberian husky

Year-Round Brushes For Huskies

To stop tangles and control shedding, Huskies need grooming all year round. Here are some recommended brushes you can use throughout the year:

  • Slicker Brush
  • Undercoat Rake
  • Pin Brush
  • Deshedding Tool
  • Comb

These brushes are essential for keeping your Husky’s coat healthy and beautiful.

Using A Comb In Husky Grooming

Comb is a compulsory  tool for husky grooming. A comb will help to remove tangles, mats, and dirt which may be missed by brush. It’s especially useful for grooming areas that are difficult to reach with a brush, such as between the legs, under the legs, and behind the ears. Comb gives a final touch in grooming.

Wide-tooth comb: This comb helps to separate knots and detangle hairs smoothly.

Fine-tooth comb: It helps to remove debris and dirt from the coat.

Best Deshedding Brush For Husky

FURminator Undercoat Deshedding Tool is one of the best deshedding tools for huskies. It features a stainless steel edge that easily removes loose undercoat hair. Handle is convenient which provides a comfortable grip, making grooming sessions easier.

The post Siberian Husky Harness : Husky Harnesses That Actually Work appeared first on United States Dog.

]]>
Siberian huskies are powerful and active dogs. In the past huskies were used to pull sleds in Siberia in harsh weather conditions. But now they are mostly used as pet dogs because of their affectionate nature.

Huskies are strong dogs so a good quality harness is mandatory for their safety as well as when to take them for a walk. In this article, we’ll explore different types of harnesses and also suggest some best harnesses for huskies.

Types Of Harness

Following are the are types of harnesses:

No-Pull Harness

No-pull harness is basically designed to reduce pulling. This harness works during training and walking time. No-pull harness has a clip on the chest side and provides good control. But not recommended during running and sled activities.

Back-Clip Harness

Back-Clip Harness has a clip on the back side. This harness has a common style. It is comfortable for huskies and easy to use. Back-Clip harness is good for well-trained huskies not ideal for untrained huskies.

Dual-Clip Harness

Dual-Clip Harness has clips on both back and front side. This harness provides good control but is slightly difficult to put on.

Sled Dog Harness

As we mentioned earlier, huskies are used for sledding. So, a sled dog harness is made to perform sled activities. This harness divides the weight along the body and allows them freedom to move or sled.

Tactical Harness

Tactical Harness is a heavy duty harness. This harness offers multiple adjusting points. Tactical Harness is mostly used for hiking and adventure dogs. This harness is bulky and not recommended for regular walks.

Major Features Of The Ideal Husky Harness

Here is breakdown of key features to look for ideal husky harness:

  • Durable material
  • Adjustable straps
  • Comfortable
  • Handle on top for better control

Top 3 Best Siberian Husky Harnesses

After testing many harnesses on our own husky we come at point these 3 harnesses are the best:

  1. RUFFWEAR Front Range Dog Harness
  2. ICEFANG Tactical Dog Harness
  3. PetSafe Easy Walk No-Pull Harness

Harness vs Collar: Why Harness is Better for Huskies?

Harness is better for huskies because they are strong pulling dogs. A collar can put pressure on a husky neck that is difficult to control. On the other side, the harness provides better control and does not put pressure on the neck.

Huskies are masters in escaping. So the collar is a little bit easy to slip off. Well-fitted harness provides more security. Harness gives a stable control on husky.

The post Shaved Husky Dog – Risks, Regrowth, and Cooling Tips appeared first on United States Dog.

]]>
Some Husky owners believe that shaving their dog’s thick coat will help them stay cool in hot weather. And others shave their Husky due to excessive shedding or aesthetic reasons.

Some owners also think that shaving reduces the need for regular grooming. In reality Husky’s double coat acts as insulation which protects them from heat and cold. Shaving will also not stop the natural shedding cycle.

In cold weather the inner coat traps warm air close to the body which keeps the Husky warm. And in hot weather the coat acts as a barrier by reflecting sunlight. Hence the double coat naturally adjusts with the seasons. Huskies experience undercoat shedding twice a year in spring and fall.

Will A Shaved Husky Grow Back?

If you shave your husky the coat may grow back unevenly with a different texture or can develop patchy spots. And can also reduce its effectiveness in temperature regulation.

Watch if some areas may regrow slower or thinner than others or the new fur may feel rougher and less effective at insulation.

It’s important to support the coat regrowth process. For this keep their skin moisturized, regular brushing, keep their coat away from sun and avoid further trimming.

Can also give them Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids, Zinc and Vitamin E, Biotin and B Vitamins and hydration for their coat healthy regrowth.

Why Shaving a Husky Is Not Recommended?

Experts do not recommend shaving a Husky because it can cause issues such as:

  • Coat Regrowth Issues
  • Skin Irritation and Dryness
  • Follicle Damage
  • Hyperpigmentation (Sunlight can cause the skin to darken in shaved areas)
  • Infection Risk

When Shaving Is Necessary?

Shaving a Husky is generally discouraged but in some medical situations it may be necessary:

1. Severe Matting

If a Husky’s coat becomes severely matted and brushing or de-matting is not possible then shaving is required to prevent discomfort and skin irritation.

2. Surgery

If a surgery is needed for your husky, the vets will shave specific areas before surgery for easier monitoring of the healing process.

3. Skin Conditions

When your husky will have conditions like hot spots, fungal infections or parasites, there may be a need for shaving to apply medication and let the skin heal.

4. Injury

If a Husky suffers a cut or bite, then shaving may be necessary to clean and treat the area.

Ways To Keep A Husky Cool

Cooling MethodDetails
Bathing with Cool Water (once a hot month)Use a mild shampoo and rinse with cool water to avoid overheating.
ShadeProvide them natural or artificial shade to avoid direct sun rays.
Fresh WaterGive them clean cold water with ice cubes.
Cooling MatsThey can lie on it, it will help lower body temperature.
FansYou can also place a fan near his resting area to improve airflow.
SprinklersLet your Husky play in a kiddie pool to cool.

The post French Bulldog Tail – Types, Problems, And Tail Language appeared first on United States Dog.

]]>
French bulldogs typically have short tails which is a natural trait. It is the result of selective breeding over centuries. Breeders developed French Bulldogs from small bulldog-type dogs that originated in England. These early bulldogs were used for bull baiting. Because bulls could grab their tails, this cruel sport required strong dogs with short, powerful tails.

In the early 19th century the need for aggressive working dogs declined because bull baiting was banned. While a short tail is more manageable for an indoor pet.

French Bulldog Tail Types

1. Straight Tail

A straight tail looks short and hangs down close to the body. It’s typically thick at the base and tapers to a blunt end. It does not have any twists or curves. And it is the most common tail type in French Bulldogs.

2. Screw Tail

The screw tail curls up, looks cute, and resembles a small spiral. It also wraps close to the body.

3. Corkscrew Tail

The Corkscrew Tail is similar to the screw tail but it curves tightly even more. This tail type is charming but can lead to issues like tail pocket infections or spinal problems.

French Bulldog Tail Problems

1. Tail Pocket Infections

A tail pocket is a fold of skin under the tail. It is common in French Bulldogs with screw or corkscrew tails. Dirt and moisture in their tail pocket can cause bacterial or yeast infections.

It is a dark area, you will see redness, swelling, and bad odor. When your dog moves he will feel itchy or may slide on the floor to relieve irritation.

So clean the tail pocket weekly with pet safe wipes, hypoallergenic shampoo and dry to avoid tail pocket infections. And if still the infection occurs, veterinarians will prescribe medicated wipes, ointments and antibiotics.

2. Hemivertebrae

Hemivertebrae is a congenital spinal deformity that causes the vertebrae to develop in an abnormal shape. Genes can cause vertebrae to become wedge-shaped.

Normally there are no symptoms. But in severe cases can lead to spinal cord compression, causing pain and weakness in the rear legs. For these severe cases the vet can advise physical therapy or even surgery.

3. Mobility Concerns

French Bulldogs can face movement and posture issues because of spinal misalignment. You can know this by noticing if he is feeling difficulty in jumping, unusual walking pattern, or reluctance to play.

4. Allergic Reactions

French Bulldogs can have skin allergies because of dust or foods. Which will affect the tail area by hair loss around the tail base. So to treat this you have to identify the allergen, use hypoallergenic grooming products and consult a vet.

French Bulldog Tail Docking

Docking is the process of surgically removing part of the dog’s tail. People think that French Bulldogs’ tails are docked at birth but they are born with short tails naturally. Their tails are not docked. They get docked for reasons like hunting and working dogs.

Some people also think that tail docking is necessary for hygiene and health. But it is a grooming issue rather than a reason for docking. While some rare French Bulldogs are born with slightly longer tails because of genetic variation.

Breed Standards and Tail Length

According to major kennel clubs the tail should be short (1 to 3 inches) and should cover the anus. A curly tail or a tail which is too long is considered a fault. And can be disqualified in confirmation shows.

Tail Language

French Bulldog’s cannot wag their tails like other dogs because of their tail size. But still if they are happy or excited you will notice quick wiggles or vibrations. When a Frenchie feels scared or anxious, they tuck their tail low. While a slightly raised tail can indicate their alertness and curiosity.
